Re: The Poetry of Anna Burgess Royce

The Copper Penny

Today at lunch my Uncle Benny
Gave me, to spend, a copper penny.
I took it to a candy shop
To buy a striped lollipop.

And while I waited for the clerk
To finish up his piece of work,
I saw 'twas made in nineteen nine
When mother's age was same as mine.

In nineteen hundred nine, or ten
Dear mother might have owned it then
And maybe -doesn't it seem funny
She bought some candy with this money.

Anna B. Royce
